Transition to fluorine-free foam concentrates
Regulatory and environmental requirements relating to foam concentrates are undergoing major changes, with fluorinated products being banned in favor of fluorine-free alternatives. Operators of ICPE and SEVESO sites, oil depots, refineries, and terminals must adapt their firefighting systems to remain compliant without losing any level of protection.
These new foam concentrates have a higher viscosity and exhibit “pseudo-plastic” behavior (non-Newtonian fluid): altered head losses, more demanding suction conditions, and pumps and proportioners that need to be reassessed. An installation designed for a fluorinated foam concentrate must therefore be requalified, and in most cases adapted. This is a hydraulic engineering task, not a simple product substitution.
